To save the dying French colony, Louis XIV asked young women volunteers to emigrate to Québec. Known as the King's Daughters, the filles were young unmarried women or widows, adventurous enough to risk looking for a new life. Armed with the king's gifts of dowries, trousseaus, and even land grants, the women were empowered to pick husbands from among the many, many eager and available prospects.
